Amazon Kindle DX - 10 Great Things for Every 1 You Lose
This evening, while watching episode #575 of GeekBrief.TV, I was taken aback by something that GB.TV host Cali Lewis said about the Amazon Kindle. “You get ten great things for every one you give up,” she said, in trying to explain why the Kindle is more awesome than reading traditional books. She did admit to having drunk the Kindle Kool-Aid, but this statement still seems a bit excessive to me. And, seriously, even if there were ten things that the Kindle gave me that a traditional book could not, I don’t think those ten things would make up for the fact that I was holding a computer in my hand instead of an actual piece of art. I don’t think one hundred features could make up for the loss of the tactile experience that reading a book brings. And I actually like the Kindle as a device—though I think it’s way overpriced—so, there you go.
Anyway, this is all just a bit of background to explain why I’m geeking out about Kindle news this evening. Wired’s review of the Kindle DX has me wanting one badly, even if it would set me back almost five-hundred smackers. The thing looks sweet, and there are some times—during the school year, for instance—where I would love to carry less shit in my bag than I do now.
