Iron Man 2: Incredibly Risky and Artistic

In an interview with Collider.com (excerpted on AICN), Robert Downey, Jr. calls Iron Man 2, “incredibly risky and artistic for a big genre movie.” When asked to elaborate, he said:
The set pieces have to do with things that aren’t your typical like bad guy conflict. The relationships are very complex and hilarious. The motivations Tony has and why he turns around and does things has completely to do with his own internal processes and it really is, I think, as much as we tried to in the first one really see behind the façade of this kind of storytelling. We really, I think, leaving ourselves open to…we’re kind of trying to tell a story about how a dysfunctional family saves life on Earth as we know it.
A dysfunctional family saving life as we know it? These guys, Downey and Favreau, they totally get Iron Man. They just totally get the character. And they understand how he fits into the greater framework for the Marvel Universe, too. “A dysfunctional family.” Man! Have we ever, as comic book fans, been as lucky as we are right now? I don’t think so. How about you?

That issue is coming back to me now, but I think I was drunk on NyQuil and Sudafed (thanks to Doctor Denis Leary, of course) the weekend I read it, so the details are vague.
