Last Time on Lost: Meet Kevin Johnson
by E. Christopher Clark | Monday, March 31, 2008

Teasing tonight’s episode for Entertainment Weekly‘s Doc Jensen, Lost executive producer Damon Lindelof says… oh, waitaminute, one of our Geek Force interns just came in to deliver some terrible, terrible news. He tells me, not only is this not a Thursday (the night Lost airs here in the U.S.), but that there will be no new episodes of Lost until April 24, and therefore no weekly teases from Damon Lindelof. Oh, man! What the hell am I going to do with myself?
Rewatch the episodes that have already aired, apparently. Here, below the fold, are some of my thoughts on the last episode of Lost that aired here in the United States, “Meet Kevin Johnson.” These should have been up last week, but I stuffed so many envelopes last week that it sapped my will to blog.
Michael Highlight Reel
So, I guess this is going to be a Michael-centic episode, huh?
My goodness, the only thing that the opening montage of Michael moments from years gone by managed to to do for me was to remind me how much I generally loathe Michael’s back story. He’s got probably the most yawn-inducing back story out of any character on Lost. And here they are, reminding me of this on a night when we’re going to get another Michael episode. I’m telling you this: if I wasn’t so curious about what the twist at the end of the episode was going to be, I might have actually turned it off and gone to bed. I was that tired. I could’ve just watched it the next day. It was only a Michael episode, after all.
Of course, it turned out to be the most awesome Michael episode ever. I guess both flashbacks he’s had post-crash have been pretty interesting, now that I think about.
Captain Asshole is at it again
Seriously, somebody throw the fucking captain overboard. I am so over this guy already. I know the actor hasn’t been given much to work with, but couldn’t he at least try to bring some depth to this guy?
Karl has his hand on Alex…
He doesn’t even have to bring her a sandwich to get himself killed. After what Ben did to Goodwin a couple of episodes back, does the close-up of Karl’s hand on Alex not completely telegraph the fact that he’s biting the big one by the end of the episode?
The only thing I’m torn about here is whether or not Ben sent Karl, Alex, and Rousseau out there to die on purpose. After Ben’s speech to John a couple weeks back about how the Others have abandoned him, I’m not sure if I’m supposed to buy his story about the temple, or not.
Random Notes
As usual, I’m running out of time. Here are some random things to ponder (and to leave your thoughts on, in the comments):
So, he’s going to kill himself huh?
Is that Libby? Is she a dream or a ghost?
Michael repeats his favorite annoying refrain, “I have a right!”, in conversation with his mama
MR. FRIENDLY!!!
There’s disgust in Friendly’s voice when he says “You’d like that, wouldn’t ya?” The Others look down on suicidal people, huh?
“The island won’t let you.”
Friendly has a boy-toy?
“People can come and go?”
“Some of us.”
Who staged the wreck? Widmore or Ben? Somebody’s lying to their people. Given how many secrets Tom is revealing to Michael, I’m inclined to believe that Ben/the Others are being honest.
Minkowski! Naomi! That makes four dead people in this episode.
Are you in or out? If he’d said “out”, what would Friendly have done? Do they have someone else on the boat? Captain Asshole, maybe?
Dude’s a bad shot, huh?
“I thought we were going on a rescue mission”
Now we know why those built/military dudes were there to greet Sayid and Desmond when they arrived
Dude, I didn’t even notice the first time around that Michael re-heard the suicide song just before Libby showed up again
Where/when did Ben communicate with Michael?
“Then consider yourself one of the good guys…”
Ben tells Michael that he is an Other now, basically.
Captain Asshole doesn’t seem surprised. Is he Ben’s second man on the boat?
Or, is this the moment where Sayid thought with his heart instead of his gun?
Why are we ending with these three relatively expendable characters? SOMEONE’S GONNA KICK IT.
“I just have a bad feeling about this.”—He gets the Han Solo line before he dies.
Dude is a much better shot in the jungle than he was on the boat
Why doesn’t Rousseau try to shoot first?
Is this exactly the outcome Ben had hoped for?
