Scott Williams is More Than a Tracer

Jean Grey artwork. Pencils by John Byrne and inks by Scott Williams

Longtime Jim Lee collaborator Scott Williams has joined the group of artists blogging at Gelatometti. I’ve always thought that the inks and embellishments provided by Willliams are a big part of why Jim Lee’s work pops the way that it does, and I honestly wish that the two of them would work together on everything that Lee does. That said, it’s nice to see him playing around with the pencils of a couple of other masters—Byrne and Kirby—in his first post. The only thing that would make this debut more perfect would be a look at the original pencils, for comparison’s sake.

Quite honestly some inkers are better artist then the people the ink…that being said Williams was a big factor in Lee’s success back in the early 90s, probably like Janson was to Miller back in the 80s. A great duo indeed…

Once Lee started to ink some of his stuff himself, he went downhill for a while—Deathblow was a kind of interesting experiment, but probably hasn’t aged well, I imagine. I’m glad to see that he’s been working with Williams again. Or, well, that he was working with him the last time he bothered to put something out, which was like fifteen years ago (or so it seems).

One of Lee’s first steady gigs at Marvel was doing Punisher War Journal, I mean he was raw and his stuff with Williams was great, especially a Wolverine vs Punisher 2 issue arc.

The friend who introduced me to Lee’s work back in the day was a HUGE War Journal fan. I never got to read it. I wonder if it’s in trade anywhere. Who was the writer? I’ve always liked the potential of Punisher as a character.
