Tucker Max Movie: The Anti-Geek Chic

By Shawn Lampron | Mon, Aug 10, 2009

For years, there has been a movement of which many of us are aware.  It catches on with a certain audience, but never really fulfills the promise.  At its current state, it consists mainly of a man named Tucker Max and another by the online moniker of Maddox.  Both have achieved degrees of success by turning their online presences into cash via literature.  Tucker published a collection of sordid tales called I Hope They Serve Beer in Hell while Maddox made some money via his book The Alphabet of Manliness.  While neither set the world aflame, each made the New York Times Bestseller List, something I, an unpublished writer, would never mock.

The Trailer for The Trailer of THE LOVELY BONES

By E. Christopher Clark | Tue, Aug 04, 2009

screen capture from the trailer for the trailer of THE LOVELY BONES

Yes, I am actually geeking out about a trailer for a trailer. If there was any doubt in your mind that I am an absolute weirdo, let that doubt be erased like an Etch-a-Sketch in an earthquake. Footage is up now on YouTube (courtesy of TheMovieBox.net) of an Entertainment Tonight trailer for the trailer to The Lovely Bones. The Lovely Bones, in case you’re not familiar is an adaptation of the novel by Alice Sebold, and it’s directed by Lord of the Rings director Peter Jackson.

My only gripe with this snippet is the ridiculous ET voiceover. As Quint from Ain’t It Cool News pointed out, Susie Salmon does not “hunt” her killer from beyond the grave. I hope this is just an indication of Hollywood’s never-ending need to puff things up that don’t need puffing up, and not indicative of the direction Jackson plans on taking the film. But I needn’t worry my pretty little head: we’ll find out soon enough. The actual trailer, sans voiceover, is apparently due to premiere on ET tonight.

Maurice Sendak on the Film Version of WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE

By E. Christopher Clark | Tue, Jul 28, 2009

I had the pleasure of seeing Maurice Sendak speak during the very first residency of the Lesley University MFA in Creative Writing Program way back in 2003. During his talk, I learned that the delightful man had done a great deal more in his career than just write Where The Wild Things Are, but it is still that most famous of his books that comes to mind when I think of him.

It is therefore with great interest that I’ve been watching the development of the film adaptation of Wild Things, which is directed by Spike Jonze. The featurette that I’ve embedded above includes interviews with Sendak and Jonze, among others, and it really is “pretty damn great” (in the words of AICN’s Harry Knowles). Check it out, and leave your thoughts below. Do you think that Where The Wild Things Are will work as a film? Do you trust Sendak on this when he raves about it? I certainly do, but I’m curious to hear what you think.

When Harry Met Weasley

Daniel Radcliffe (Harry Potter) and Rupert Grint (Ron Weasley) on the day they met

Check out this awesome photo by Harry Potter producer David Heyman from way back in the day. It captures the day that Daniel Radcliffe (Harry Potter) and Rupert Grint (Ron Weasley) first met. It accompanies a blog post from the Los Angeles Times that explores Heyman’s relationship with the development of the film series that’s also well worth a read.

And then, for the truly crazy Potter fan, there is this gem of a link that comes to us from Bethany Snyder. For the low, low price of $49, you can get your very own hand-crafted, faithful-to-the-books Ollivander wand.
