Spoil or Tease: How is Geek Force Five Doing on LOST Coverage?

Friday, August 29, 2008

As production on the fifth season of Lost ramps up this month, plenty of information is leaking out about exactly how The Powers That Be are going to pick things up from where they left off at the end of season four. And that’s got me wondering how Geek Force Five is doing when it comes to Lost coverage.

There is a fine line between “spoiler” and “teaser,” as far as I’m concerned. I always try to stick to the “teaser” side of that line, and to only veer into “spoiler” territory in articles that continue below the fold, thereby giving those who wish to stay pure a fair warning. But I think the problem with that fine line between “spoiler” and “teaser” is that individual fans draw it at different points in the sand. What I consider a “teaser” may be very much a “spoiler” to you.

So, I ask you: how am I doing? Have I spoiled things for you in the past? And, if so, what can I do to keep from spoiling you in the future? Or, have I struck just the right balance? In your opinion, what is the difference between a “spoiler” and a “teaser”? Let me know.

In the meantime, here’s a tease for you: DarkUFO’s spoilers site is reporting that we will see another unexpected visitor from season two in the upcoming season, and that “the overturned fuselage of a small Cessna-sized plane” will make an appearance in an early episode as well. Make of that what you will.

Worth Your Consideration 016 - A GF5 Linkdump

Wednesday, August 27, 2008
  • I’ve had the first episode of Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles sitting unplayed on my Apple TV since about a week after its premiere (it was a free download on iTunes way back when), but this Newsarama piece on the show’s second season has piqued my interest, and I may have to finally sit down and devote an hour to the show now.
  • Earlier this year, when Marvel Comics retconned Peter Parker and Mary Jane Watson’s marriage with their back-to-back “One More Day” and “Brand New Day” events, they introduced a new red-headed super-heroine by the name of Jackpot. She looks like Mary Jane, talks like Mary Jane, and has named herself after one of MJ’s most famous catchphrases, but her secret identity has yet to be revealed. Newsarama reports that the mystery will end in an upcoming Amazing Spider-Man annual, but me, I already know who it is: the resurrected Gwen Stacy. Yep, you heard it here first. And the masked villain Menace? That’s the long-dead Uncle Ben, come back to life. If the fanboys hated Marvel editor-in-chief Joe Quesada before, I guarantee death threats this time around.
  • Jason Kottke describes the anatomical drawings on this site as “part medical and part American Apparel advertisement” and he’s pretty much dead-on.
  • And, lastly, Apple is giving me one more reason to enjoy trips up north to see my in-laws: an Apple Store in the Maine Mall. Stephanie may even be able to convince me to move up there now… Nah, probably not.

Second Dharma Initiative Test

Wednesday, August 27, 2008

A second Dharma Initiative screening test is up on DharmaWantsYou.com, the site for Lost’s latest alternate reality game (ARG). I think I did better on this “Broad Spectrum Knowledge Analysis” test than I did on the spatial test (first mentioned here), but that’s not saying much. I’m pretty sure there were a few questions that a dude with a Master’s degree (even if it is a Master’s in creative writing) should probably know. And, unlike the spatial test, which told you how much you sucked right out of the gate, this test does not display your results at its conclusion.

How about you? Have you taken the test yet? How do you think you did?

Picking on the Porn Star

Wednesday, August 27, 2008

MSNBC has a piece on Zack and Miri Make a Porno up now and, among other things, it elaborates on which scene nearly earned the film an NC-17.

Smith nipped and tucked the key objectionable segment, a comically over-the-top sex scene between Mewes and Morgan. But the ratings board held to the NC-17 designation, which Smith later got knocked down to an R rating after stating his case to the MPAA appeals board.

So, it was the Mewes-Morgan scene, huh? Remember Kevin joking about how “believable” that scene turned out to be? I don’t think we should be surprised that the scene featuring the active porn star was the one the MPAA chose to pick on. Regardless of whether it’s a cartoonish sequence or not, the guys in the screening room must’ve known that Morgan did this stuff for real in her day job and that must’ve come into play. Don’t you think?

Getting LOST in Time - More on Time in LOST Season Five

Monday, August 25, 2008

A quick quote about the issue of time in the upcoming fifth season of Lost:

There will still be flashbacks and flashforwards, but there will be equally other ways of telling the story, something totally new in the series. In the first episode, you will neither know what time period the action is taking place in, nor where the action is happening. The scenes will take place on the island and in different parts of the world and at different time periods according to the characters.

[Found at DarkUFO Spoilers]

I’m really digging what I’m hearing here, a lot more than I’m digging my 36% score on the first Dharma Wants You test. Ugh… My friend John Herman scored 70%. How have you scored?
