Donut as Hamburger Bun? A Stroke of Genius, says I

photograph of a hamburger with bacon and eggs on a donut-as-bun

I think I may have to kick someone out of my Geek Force Five in order to make room for the one food that I am absolutely geeky about: the hamburger. I came across Hamburger Today this morning (via Metafilter) and I think I’m in love. It’s a blog dedicated to the discussion of hamburgers. How have I missed out on this until now?

The photo that I’m including here, of Paula Deen’s donut-as-bun Lady’s Brunch Burger, is something that I want to go out and eat right now. The hell with my diet! This thing’s got a hamburger, a fried egg, a couple slices of bacon, and it’s served on a glazed donut?!? What’s not to love?

What do you think, Geek-Forcers? Who should I kick out of the club to make way for the Hamburglar?

How is it that I have gone my whole life and never thought to use a glazed donut as a hamburger bun? HOW???? Of course the fried egg and two slices of bacon are an especially genius touch! I want one NOW!!!!! In fact if it meant procuring myself one of these delicious treats I would gladly throw Steve Jobs off my five. I’m sorry Steve, but while you do tickle my inner geek you can never bring me the joy one of these heart attack inducing sandwiches could.

We’re just going to have to throw a party and serve these things. I would totally be up for making them.

On an unrelated note, I am very amused that the Google Ads for this entry right now are for

1. Opening a Dunkin Donuts franchise
2. How to lose 55 lbs with an amazing Chinese weight loss secret
3. 10 tips to lose belly fat
4. Geek Squad’s official site (for a job where being fat doesn’t matter, right?)
5. Mini donut maker

Equal opportunity ads, man!

What a perfect combination of fat, salt, grease and sweet… perhaps the next time you visit we shall make these masterpieces. As for who to knock off… don’t hate me but… the damon/afflack thing I’ve never gotten… and (SHHHHHH.... I don’t watch lost… yup I have never seen an episode...) But I would love to talk ooey goey food...I also find it fitting that as I type this comment about the most wonderful foods put together as one, I have noticed that your “spam-destroying robot” has asked me to type in : Size 75… coincidence? I think not…

Wow - the fried egg amps the intensity level to CRAZINESS. I’d skip it in favor of cheese, but the donut bun concept is very intriguing. Perhaps I’ll try this someday when I’m feeling reckless. smile

ChrisClark says:

The fried egg really is a bit much, isn’t it?

I’m telling you… I’m going to throw a dinner party and these things are going to be the main course. And anyone who can’t stomach the things has to go home.

All it’s missing is beer battered onion rings!!! I get nauseated just looking at it. Ugg. Spam-destroying robot is predicting where the fat will go on my ass if I consume the Brunch Burger… Area 98…

Okay, on the subject of ooey-gooey food, let’s talk about the beauty of deep frying things that normally would never be deep fried, such as Snickers bars and Oreo cookies. Mmmmmm. God bless the genius that said, “You know what this chocolately goodness needs? A golden, crispy batter coating!”

(Spam-destroying robot says “run34.” Which makes total sense since I’m 34 and should run to burn off the calories from these tasty treats.)

ChrisClark says:

Toby, you’re totally right about the beer battered onion rings. I knew it was missing something, but I couldn’t put my finger on it.

grin

Bethany, I am totally with you on deep frying things that shouldn’t be deep fried. I am still regretting the fact that at last year’s BeerFest (or whatever it’s called) in nearby Merrimack, NH I did not plunk down the change for some deep-fried Oreos. This summer, I’m going after those things straight away.

Bethany says:

Your life will be permanently changed by the deep-fried Oreo experience. In fact, I’ll be waiting to see your Five change. grin

ChrisClark says:

Oh, I so don’t want to wait until the summer now. I’m going to have to find a recipe and make one of these myself.

Unless anyone knows where to pick one up right now.

Instead of the Hamburgler, it should totally be Wimpy from Popeye as the hamburger rep!

I think you’re right, RoboYuji. What about everyone else?

Hamburglar vs. Wimpy
