Geek Force at PodCamp Boston 3 (PCB3)

I’m at PodCamp Boston 3 this weekend, representing the association I work for full-time, as well as me, the writer, and Geek Force Five, the site. And I’m having a blast. Here’s a shot of me playing pool at the afterparty, if you don’t believe me. That’s me, first from the left, right around the time that my second or third Smirnoff Ice suddenly (and awesomely) elevated my game.
You can mind more photos on Flickr by searching for the tag “pcb3,” which is also the tag to look for on Twitter, YouTube, Viddler, or wherever else you might want to look
If you’re not familiar with the concept of a PodCamp, here’s a pretty good quote from PodCamp Capetown:
PodCamp is a community driven UnConference for anybody and everybody in New Media. Whether you create and/or consume content by podcasting, listening, blogging, reading, producing video, watching and anything else that is New Media.
I’m not exactly in love with the term New Media, but that quote pretty much sums up what’s going on. If you’re following me on Twitter, I’m sure you’ve already seen some updates related to the big show. Keep following me throughout the weekend for more. And, if there’s a PodCamp in your area, and you’re at all interested in this kind of stuff, please do consider going. It has been well worth the price of admission, so far.
Oh, and one last thing: welcome to any and all who might be joining us thanks to my pimping out the site at PodCamp. Leave a message in the comments, if you’ve got a moment, and let the world know who would be in your Geek Force Five. That’s the traditional method of greeting around here.

Hi Chris,
It would be nice if the photo linked here:
http://flickr.com/photos/financialaidpodcast/2668285090/
That way people could see it on flickr and comment, and also grab the code to use it on their website if they wanted.
Also, Christopher Penn has a Creative Commons license on his photo.
CC BY-NC-ND
You need to give him attribution.
The Globe also used this photo and gave hum attribution right under it:

It’s mostly Flickr’s fault though:
See my blog post about it:

Flickr’s SHARE THIS embed code needs to be enhanced to include CC LICENSE ATTRIBUTES.
If the person requests attribution, their names should be added below the photo embed.
If the person requests a certain license and wants you to post the same license on the photo when you use it, that should also be added under the photo like: CC BY-NC-SA

Corrected link to my blog post about how Flickr needs to improve their photo embed code to support creative commons and attribution.

Thanks for the tips on this, Steve. I’ve made the correction to my post and corrected the URL in your original comment (do you want me to remove the secondary comment then?).
It was partially my fault, because I didn’t just embed the photo right from Flickr. I have family who come to my site from behind corporate firewalls that block Flickr (why, I don’t know...), and they’re never able to see the photos I’m referring to, so I decided to download the photo and reupload it to my site. That’s when I forgot to add the link. If I’d just used Flickr’s pre-generated link, I would have solved half the problem. I’ll remember that in the future.
Your point on them including the license in their code is a good one. That should be easy enough for them to do, and I’m not sure why they’re not already doing it.
Anyway, it was great to meet you at PodCamp and I look forward to talking more in the future online and at Boston MediaMakers and such.

Thanks. It’s ok to leave the history of the broken URL on there.
Flickr is a mess and is not helping by ignore long time request to fix photo sharing by adding the attribution.
It’s a lot of work that they require us to do, when they could easily program the site to add everything in there.
Over on my post I just added a link to the CC license too. I figured if I’m posting an example, why not link to everything.
It also like how Seesmic implemented the CC license with little icons.
Love your site, I’ll be back.
Thanks for the quick fix and explanation…
ChrisClark says:
Great idea to include a link to the license. That makes a lot of sense for the reader who might not know what CC is all about and who might want to learn more without first clicking through to Flickr.
That also reminds me that I’ve been meaning to change the copyright in my footer to a CC license… Ah, all the things I’ve added to my to-do list, thanks to PodCamp. It’s been a long time since I’ve come away from a weekend feeling so pumped to go out and do things.
