Geek, Nerd, Dork: Which is Good? Which is Bad?

By E. Christopher Clark | Monday, August 11, 2008

I’ve always found the word “geek” to be a term of endearment. A geek, to me, is someone who is passionate about something, to the point of ridiculousness, and who is totally willing to admit that. A “nerd,” to me, always signified someone who was a geek but tried to deny it. And a “dork” was just somebody who did something silly or stupid. You were only ever temporarily a “dork.”

But, this isn’t about me. This is about you! Tell the world, in the comments below, what the words geek, nerd, and dork mean to you.

Need A Man? The Apple Store is The Place To Be!

By E. Christopher Clark | Monday, March 03, 2008

While most Apple junkies are salivating over news of what will come out of Thursday’s iPhone SDK “roadmap” event, I am more concerned with another bit of news that TUAW brought us over the weekend. Apparently, Cosmopolitan magazine says that the Apple Store is a great place to pick up a guy. Ladies and gents, do we really believe this to be true? Here’s what Cosmo says:

Most guys are natural gadget lovers, and with sales of iPods and MacBooks skyrocketing, more men than ever are stopping by Apple boutiques. The vibe at the stores is conducive to man meeting too: You can check your email among cuties, take a free workshop on anything from Photoshop to podcasting (a great opportunity to strike up a conversation), or just survey the, ahem, good-looking merchandise.

Okay, sure, many men love gadgets. But are the types of men who actually hang out at the Apple Store the types of men that women who read Cosmo are interested in? My guess would a big fat no, unless these are alums of Beauty and the Geek we’re talking about here.

Who’s in your Geek Force Five?

By E. Christopher Clark | Monday, February 18, 2008

So, if you had to pick five things to talk about for the rest of your life and only five, what would those things be? Your favorite band? The TV show that you’ve programmed your Tivo to keep around forever, on penalty of death? A computer technology company that develops chic products for mere mortals like you?

In short, what do you absolutely geek out about?

On Monday, February 25, I’ll start writing about the five things that I’ve chosen. Until then, use this space to tell the world who would be in your own personal Geek Force Five, and why.
