3G iPhone Arrives June 9?!?

iPhone 3G Ad Mockup by Jesus Diaz of Gizmodo

Maybe it’s a good thing that I haven’t yet found the money for an iPhone. Mac Rumors, Electronista, and The Unofficial Apple Weblog are all reporting on a rumor originally posted by Gizmodo that says Apple’s new 3G iPhone will be available on or soon after the WWDC Keynote on June 9. The first-generation iPhone is no longer available via Apple’s Website and is in short supply at retail outlets across the country. Many other signs in recent weeks have pointed to the imminent release of a new model, but Gizmodo is the first to claim that at June 9 launch has been “confirmed”.

I’ve been living with a third-generation iPod for four years now, and the thing is doing its best not to give up the ghost, but its time may be almost up. It regularly forgets that it has battery power nowadays, resetting itself at random intervals, and it refuses to play podcasts or high-quality audio files at all. If I had the money a couple of weeks ago, I would have bought an iPhone straight away. But now I’m glad that things have worked out the way that they have. I might be positioned just right to be one of the first to get his hands on the new device, instead of one of the last to pick up the old and out-of-date one. That would be a new experience for me—I bought my iMac last year two months or so before the newer, slicker version came out—and a most welcome one, to boot.

Apple Store Boston Opens Tomorrow!

Apple Store Boston Gets Cleaned

The Green Monster has been peeled off of the Apple Store on Boylston Street in Boston, I have been confirmed as one of the correspondents for ifoAppleStore’s coverage of the event, and salvation arrives tomorrow, one day earlier than I’d reported previously.

Is anyone going to this? Want to co-anchor the GF5 coverage with me? Mr. Greg Tsiatis, if you’re reading this, I’m looking at you. We’ve talked in the past about teaming up for something totally geeky. This is our opportunity, man, is it not?

Music Video Set On/Inside A Mac Desktop

By E. Christopher Clark | Monday, May 12, 2008

When you have a second, check out the amazing YouTube video that I’ve embedded above. Not only is the song ("Again & Again,” by The Bird and the Bee) great, but the video is set entirely on/inside/within the confines of a Mac desktop. As TUAW puts it, “You sort of have to see it for yourself to understand.”

Even if you’re vehemently anti-Mac, this is worth your trouble. Just imagine Clippy making a special guest appearance, or something.

Apple’s Photo Booth App Helps Recover Stolen Laptop

By E. Christopher Clark | Monday, May 12, 2008

The Unofficial Apple Weblog broke this story on Friday, the New York Times followed up on Saturday, and I’ve been laughing about it all weekend long.

Apparently, Kait Duplaga, an employee of the Westchester, NY Apple Store, used Apple’s “Back to My Mac” service, in combination with the popular Photo Booth application, to snap a picture of the morons who stole her laptop but didn’t think to reformat the thing.

“Back to My Mac,” in case you’re not familiar, is part of the Apple’s .Mac servce which allows a user to control their computer remotely from any other .Mac enabled machine. Photo Booth, for the uninitiated, is an application which uses the Mac’s built-in camera to snap pictures of the people standing or sitting in front of it. If you see lots of teenaged mallrats hanging out at your local Apple retail outlet, Photo Booth is probably what they’re there for.

Ms. Duplaga used these two applications to snap photos of the culprits, which she then delivered to the police. The culprits, who, according to the deputy commissioner of public safety in White Plains, “were arrested last year on a felony marijuana possession charge” are not “career criminals.” And I think that’s probably a pretty darned good thing. Seriously, dudes, if you’re going to steal laptops for a living, you better be up-to-date on what they can do. Otherwise, just roll yourself a couple joints, listen to some Afroman, and fix yourself a plate of brownies.

Geek Force FiveCast 013 (Video)

By E. Christopher Clark | Sunday, May 11, 2008

I attended the inaugural meeting of New Hampshire Media Makers on Sunday, May 11. This is me geeking out about that. Links to many of the cool people I met can be found in the video, or else at the various blogs that have covered the event: 1, 2, and 3. Roger Goun took photos (as did several others), and his photos can be found here.
