Firefox 3 Download Day 2008

Download Day

A couple of weeks ago, I wrote about settling for Mozilla Firefox as a browser (and for Barack Obama as a presidential candidate). I’m happy to report that the Firefox 3 release candidate I’ve been using on my work laptop has been working out swimmingly for me (and that I’m getting excited about Obama as a presidential candidate, too). In fact, I’ve grown so attached to one of Firefox 3’s new features—it’s ability to know that I want to visit Google Analytics just as soon as I type “analytics” into the address bar—that I find myself disoriented when I’m home on my iMac and Safari isn’t doing the same thing.

Now it’s your chance to experience the awesomeness of Firefox 3 for yourself. Today is Firefox 3 Download Day. The fine folks at Mozilla are attempting to set the Guinness World Record for Most Software Downloaded in 24 Hours, and you can help them achieve that goal. I’m off to do my part right now. Can you think of a good reason why you shouldn’t do yours?

Garfield Minus Garfield

an excerpt from the Garfield Minus Garfield comic strip

My brother John flew in from California for the weekend to celebrate our cousin Michael’s graduation and, of course, Father’s Day. While he was here, he told me about Garfield Minus Garfield, an amusing comic strip remix by Travors which Jason Kottke is also covering today.

The idea of Garfield Minus Garfield is best summed up by the summary that Travors includes in the header of every page:

Who would have guessed that when you remove Garfield from the Garfield comic strips, the result is an even better comic about schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and the empty desperation of modern life? Friends, meet Jon Arbuckle. Let’s laugh and learn with him on a journey deep into the tortured mind of an isolated young everyman as he fights a losing battle against loneliness in a quiet American suburb.

Apparently, even Garfield creator Jim Davis is a fan of the strip.

I loved Garfield growing up, and I still love the strip when I remember to pick up a newspaper and read it, as I did at my parents’ house yesterday. Here’s Sunday’s strip, which is what got me off on this whole tangent.

What does the Geek Force think of Garfield? Are there any other newspaper comic strips that you enjoy?

Worth Your Consideration 003 - A GF5 Linkdump

  • The latest Nine Inch Nails album, The Slip, which is available as a free download will also now be available as a physical CD. However, The NIN Hotline reports that only 200,000 copies will be released in the United States. The physical release will include, among other things, “a DVD of NIN performing live tracks from The Slip at rehearsals,” and I am ready to beat down anybody who stands in the way of me getting a copy.
  • William Katt, the star of the most awesome television program of all-time, The Greatest American Hero, will be guest-starring on NBC’s Heroes next season. Newsarama reports that Katt will play a “really, really wonderful, seedy, smarmy-mouthed reporter.” Me, I haven’t seen any of the second season of Heroes, but I’m definitely going to have to catch up, now that I know about this upcoming guest appearance.

Oh, the hell with it: I’m voting Republican!

And if this video doesn’t convince you to do the same, then I don’t know what will.

The Return of Those Little Bastads

Tuesday, June 10, 2008

Back at the end of April, I announced that I was going to be expanding my presence on the Web by launching and/or re-launching several Websites. And while I’ve decided not to get quite as ambitious as I originally outlined (at least not right now), I am happy to report that the official E. Christopher Clark Website is now online. This new personal Website is dedicated to my writing and my c.v., but the development that I’m most excited about is that this Website has facilitated the return of my first book, Those Little Bastads, to the market. For the first time in a couple of years, you can now buy copies of the book direct from me. It’s near the end of its initial print-run, so if you don’t already own a copy, I suggest you go pick yourself up a copy today.

And if my admittedly biased opinion isn’t enough to sway you, please do check out the new review at Books Without Limits.
